If somebody told you, you had been selected for admission to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, you’d probably start dancing. Yes, Vancouver has consistently rated as one of the finest places to live in over the years. But, hold it a second, what if your accommodation is going to be a ‘nano suite’?

The 140-square-feet fully furnished suite may be the size of an average parking stall, but it is surprisingly livable with a mini kitchen, double bed, and a small bathroom complete with shower. These suites are a part of a pilot project, which will have 70 of the micro (nano) suites and will be in one of the existing residence areas. The project is expected to reach fruition by the year 2019.

The suite was a product of demand for more affordable campus housing. The nano suites are expected to rent for about $700 a month when ready for occupancy in 2019. That compares to current 230 sq ft studio suites that will rent for about $1,100 in 2019.

There’s a huge demand for more housing on campus as there are currently more than 10,000 student beds on campus, with five new projects, including the micro suites, that will add another 2,000 beds.

The new residence building with the micro suites will be at the core of the campus, allowing a 10-minute walk to most classes on campus and three minutes to the swimming pool and fitness centre.

Each nano suite will be wired with high-speed Internet but will not be furnished with TVs. Instead, TVs with basic cable will be located in common lounge areas on each floor.
