Chandy, VS take poll battle to cyber world

Last Updated 19 April 2016, 19:09 IST

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan have now taken their long-fought political battle to a new turf — Facebook.

Chandy delivered his opening salvo on Monday with a sarcastic post on his Facebook page targeting Achuthanandan who had recently made an official entry to the world of internet with his own web page and social media accounts.

“It’s good that you and your party have finally realised the potential of new media. But I’m also forced to remind you of the anti-computer protests by CPM’s youth organisations in the 1980s. You yourself had called computers monsters which took away jobs from tens of thousands of people, remember?” Chandy wrote.

The chief Minister also reminded Achuthanandan of the losses the state suffered because of the Left’s opposition to information technology (IT). Achuthanandan returned fire on Tuesday with his trademark spunk.

“Oommen Chandy has tried to sell off Infopark — a project which has given jobs to 28,000 Malayalis – to Smart City at the price of scrap.

He’s gushing about IT development and making fun of my internet presence now because he has thick skin,” the 92-year-old veteran responded on his Facebookb page. He said Communists didn’t hesitate to “correct mistakes” and move forward and reminded Chandy that the first IT park in India — Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram — was opened by a Left government.

“Google it, you’ll know,” he said. Chandy is expected to take time off a hectic poll campaign to swing the next blow.

Oommen chandy: It’s good that you and your party have finally realised the potential of new media. But I’m also forced to remind you of the anti-computer protests by CPM’s youth organisations in the 1980s.
