Rain exposes Palike's monsoon readiness

Friday’s rain thoroughly exposed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s lack of preparedness for the ensuing monsoon season. The roads were inundated leading a long traffic snarls across the city due to clogged drains.

BBMP control room reported tree uprooting behind Baiyappanahalli metro station, Kumar Park East, Jayanagar  4th T Block, Jayanagar 32 F Cross, Jayanagar 10 th Cross at second block, 3rd Cross at Kumar Park West, Vasavi College near VV Puram, Shanthinagar near Hindu burial ground, Thyagarajanagar, Vijayanagar, Jayanagar 9th Main and Maruti Circle at Hanumanthanagar. Along with this, two trees were uprooted at Jayanagar 10th Main.

Trees were also uprooted at Kengeri New Town Main road and also at Kadirenahalli Main Road leading to slow traffic movement.

Water logging at Anil Kumble Circle,  Siddalingaiah Junction,  Tin Factory, Krishna flour mill, Cantonment railway station, Minerva Junction, Anil Kumble Junction, Khoday’s Junction, Bhashyam Circle, Silk Board Junction, Sindhi Colony at Benniganahalli Main Road,  RBANMS Grounds at Shivajinagar, Indiranagar 80 feet Road, Tannery Road and Anil Kumble Circle leading to bumper-to-bumper traffic.

“It took me more than an hour to reach Anil Kumble Circle from Kumara Krupa Road.
Every time it rains, the same story repeats. Better infrastructure and preventive measures is the key to this traffic jam menace,” said Supreetha Kaur, a working professional who stays near Halasuru.

The traffic on the Hosur Road came to a grinding halt because of the flooding roads forcing commuters to spend long hours on the road. 

The underpass near Kino theatre was flooded resulting in traffic chaos and misery among motorists.  At Mahalakshmipuram ward, about five houses were flooded and the Palike sent its team equipped with pumps to drain the water out.

Two ambulances were stuck in between Tin factory to Nagavara stretch due to traffic jams. Sujatha , one of the residents from Nagavara said: “It took me one and half hours to reach my place. Usually it takes close to 45 minutes and not more than that. The Tannery road stretch was in total mess and vehicles were moving at a snail’s pace.”

Power cuts

Bescom was flooded with complaints due to power cuts at several places.  Five poles were broken Due to 2 tree fall in Jayanagar 9th block, a pole each was damaged in Domlur, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and on JC Road.

Power interruption was major in Agara, Koramangala, Jayanagar, JP Nagar 2nd phase, Banashankari 2nd stage  and Murgeshpalya  due to feeder fault is majorly in south- Agara, Koramangala, Jayanagar. JP Nagar 2nd phase, Banashankari 2nd stage and Murgeshpalya.

Commuters had a tough time in boarding and deboarding the trains at Banaswadi railway station on Friday as power went off at 6.30 pm. Railway officials said that one of the powerlines at the station slipped off  due to heavy rains. This made the train commuters to rely on their mobile phone torch light to make way to reach the train in the crowded platform and also to move out of the station.

An official in the railway said that efforts have been made by the bescom men to rectify the problem. There was also no information available for the commuters on the arrival and departure of trains as display boards went dark and even no announcement on speakers. 

Bescom received 2039 calls and 1121 complaints between 4 pm to 7 pm.
