Prime Minister to visit Davangere on May 29

Last Updated 21 May 2016, 19:45 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a rally in Davangere on May 29 as part of the BJP’s nationwide celebrations to mark the completion of two years of its government at the Centre.

State BJP president B S Yeddyurappa made the announcement at a party convention here on Saturday.

The BJP has strategically chosen Davangere as it is a Lingayat stronghold. Lingayats form the vote base of the BJP. The party has been sharpening its knives against the Siddaramaiah government following the debacle of the Congress in the recently held Assembly polls.

The Congress lost power in Kerala and Assam.

Sources in the BJP said while nothing would be done to destabilise the government, the party would start building momentum for 2018 Assembly polls in Karnataka.

The party is formulating a strategy to keep the state Congress on tenterhooks by launching a series of agitations against the government.

Karnataka is the only major state out of the six states where the Congress is in power.

Modi’s Davangere rally would be a platform to enthuse party workers for building momentum to take on the ruling party in the next Assembly polls.
