Tucked away behind the popular ‘Desserted’, this place is worth a try if you’re looking for a meal around Vasanth Nagar, Loafers Lane.
Simply named ‘The Place Behind Desserted’, the restaurant started around 6 months ago. The owner Shwetha Kurada (who also happens to run ‘Desserted’) began it with the idea to serve a variety of meals, both veg and non-veg, particularly for the office crowd and college students.
The place is best known for its ‘chicken biryani’, ‘paneer butter masala’, ‘dal fry’ and ‘kalmi kebab’. Well-garnished and served, the food tastes nice and fresh. The ‘paneer butter masala’ is medium spicy and one can also have it prepared without onion and garlic. The ‘dal fry’ has the right consistency with a nice tinge of lemon, perfect to go with the crisp ‘rotis’.
There are 2 head chefs and 2 assistants, who say that the secret behind the taste is their method of preparation. The head chef Raju specialises in Andhra food. He highlights, “It takes about 20 mins to prepare 1 serving of the ‘biryani’. We don’t prepare it previously and keep it. We make fresh food as and when people come.”
The restaurant also has daily specials like ‘chilli chicken’, ‘chicken fry’, ‘chettinad chicken’, ‘veg kebabs’ and more. The menu also has a variety of ‘rotis’ that includes ‘naans’, ‘tandoori rotis’, ‘kulchas’ and ‘paranthas’.
Shraddha Vasudevan, a student of Mount Carmel College, says, “It is one of the popular places in this area. I have been here 4 times in the past month and ordered 10 different items. Each dish has been delicious. My favourite is dosa with chicken curry and soup”.
The menu is limited with reasonable prices and there is a promising ‘kebab’ stall. However, with the bright red whimsical elements and a spiral iron staircase, you’d certainly be confused with the juxtaposition of the menu with the decor. There aren’t many attendants and the service can be quicker. But the food makes up for that!
