It takes more than a bed to make a bedroom. With a little bit of creativity, it can be converted into a space where you can unwind easily, writes Preethi Nagaraj

The Dalai Lama said, “Sleep is the best meditation.” Truer words have, perhaps, not been spoken. But in the present day scenario, how many of us use our bedrooms only to sleep? A bedroom has become a personal sanctuary for most of us — a place to work, watch television, curl up with a good read, and even have brunch on a lazy Sunday morning!

Add character

It’s not just a sturdy cot and a good mattress that defines this space anymore, but the little details and accents that reflect your personality. Here are 5 easy ways to spruce up your bedroom:

Deck up your walls — Create a statement wall with a wallpaper. Floral and serene prints have always been popular for bedrooms as they are synonymous with serenity and harmony. If you are looking to experiment, there are numerous choices available today. Textured wallpaper, bold prints, eye-catching motifs and graphic designs can be used to create a unique statement.

If you are looking to go a bit more dramatic, why not try the 3-D wall decals? Different prints and textures can be used as alternating panels to give a striking effect. Cool blues and turquoise are some of the trending colours.

Decorative mirror — A large decorative mirror in metallic hues of dull gold, silver, copper or mother of pearl can add a touch of glamour to your bedroom. You can mount it on the statement wall to oomph up the luxe effect. Accessories like bedside lamps, vases or even door knobs in similar metallic tones will help accentuate the extravagance.

Window treatment — Get rid of the boring curtains with loops and go in for some special window treatments. Adorn the windows with venetian/roman blinds in colours and patterns to complement the rest of the decor. Blinds not only add an earthy charm to the bedroom, but are more convenient in controlling the amount of light entering the room. With ‘going green’ being the norm of the day, eco-friendly materials are becoming popular. Natural materials like bamboo and banana fibre actually help in keeping the room cool.

Statement carpet — Choose tufted carpets to instantly liven up the space. You can go for a linear one placed at the foot end of the bed or a large rectangular one which covers a wide area giving a warm, cosy feel. A splash of bright colour on the floor with muted walls and accessories will look impressive. Or opt for solids in neutral colours for a calming effect.

Go green — Bring a bit of greenery indoors with planter shelves. Planter shelves are becoming a popular choice when it comes to adding greenery to a room in a stylish way. Small, indoor plants that require low maintenance can be kept on the ladder-like shelf by the window. Bringing nature into your bedroom can be a refreshing addition to soothe your sore eyes at the end of a tired day.

If you are looking for something that is low on maintenance, try plants such as pothos, lucky bamboo, jade plant, ferns and cacti. Some of them also have air purifying properties, too. Add a recliner and an ottoman near the planter shelf and you will surely feel the stress ease away.

These special touches can be easily incorporated into your existing bedroom.
