Spurred by the national award for its solar rooftop installation project, Bescom has set a target of generating 50 MW through installations by year end.

Bescom consultant Satish Kumar, who received the award on behalf of the company, from Minister of State for Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal in New Delhi recently, told Deccan Herald, “The state was selected for the award because the installation and power generation is purely done by people, without any government support. Of the 7 MW being generated by rooftop installations, 80% of it is generated in Bengaluru while the remaining is from the installations in Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagaram and Channapatna.”

“The Bescom has set a target of generating 50 MW by year end and hopes to reach 100 MW in next three years. Interestingly, the demand for the installations from poultries in rural areas is very high. The company wants to tap the potential in this sector and aims to generate one MW from this sector,” he said. The Bescom consultant added that it would take at least six months to generate one MW of power, and one 10X10 feet rooftop installation can generate 1kW power.

Kumar said, “Bescom won the award because the rooftop installation project is driven by the people and like in other states, no government funds are involved in it. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board generates 30 MW but it is funded by the state government under various government schemes. In Bengaluru, the installations at St Jospeh's College is generating 100 kW. About 30 to 40 kW power is being generated by the installations on the residence of Energy Minister D K Shivakumar. The installations at Chinnaswamy Stadium generates 400KW, he added.
