Minority colleges want MBBS fees hiked to Rs 20 lakh

Last Updated 16 June 2016, 20:36 IST
Shafi Ahmed, secretary of the Karnataka Religious, Linguistic and Minority Professional Colleges’ Association (KRLMPCA) has said that a fee hike of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh is necessary for medical and dental seats in colleges under the association.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Ahmed said, “In other states like Maharashtra and UP, the fees for medical are to the tune of Rs 15 lakh to 20 lakh. We want the fees here in Karnataka to be on a par with them if we have to share the seats with the government.”

The fee of Rs 50,000 under the government quota is untenable, he added. The association has around 300 MBBS and 200 BDS seats in its colleges of which 25% is under the government quota. He further said that the association would wait till about June 25 to meet Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil on the matter.

A few days ago, the Karnataka Professional Colleges’ Foundation that has 12 institutes under it had said that it was ready to give the government 85% of the seats provided that the government was ready to hike the fees to Rs 4 lakh a year.

Sharanprakash Patil said that a meeting has been scheduled on Saturday and the matter would be sorted out then.
