First of many more to come in future

Dustin Johnson is finally a Major champion and in quite a dramatic manner. Dramatic finishes and Dustin seem to go hand in hand, but this time he got over the line as the most deserving manner. After countless Top-10s in Majors, he gets his first and this could well be the first of many more in the future, for so talented is he.

It seems Johnson’s ball moved on the putting green as he went to address his putt. Johnson correctly consulted the rules official and at that moment he was not penalised. Later when he was on 12th and leading by two, he was again informed that he might be penalised a stroke.

That meant he really did not know his score and in a needle contest one shot means a lot, maybe even the title.

However, Johnson showed no tension and ended at five-under, which after the tournament ended was made four-under with a penalty.

Johnson, I believe, told the media that he went about the business because there was nothing he could and later said, fortunately, it didn’t affect the outcome. Considering his showings at other Majors, watch out for him at the Open and the PGA where he has been a whisker away from winning in the recent past.

Jim Furyk showed that experience matters at Oakmont, as he finished tied-second after also having played there in 1994 and 2007. Shane Lowry was also tied-second as was Scott Piercy, while Sergio Garcia was fifth and Lee Westwood was done in the final round.

Personally, Oakmont was a big learning, as all Majors are. The US Open, as I have said before, is always a stern test but still it played as fair as it could in the given conditions. I made too many errors and could have managed the course better because strategy is very important at a course like Oakmont.

That four putt on 12th put a stop to any momentum especially after I had somewhat recovered towards the end of the first round.

I also had a bit of a fight with flu, cough and cold, but of course even then I should have been better. Also I need to putt better on faster greens, that’s something I need to do a lot better.
