After being rebuffed by his lover of his marriage proposal, a man stabbed her to death in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar area on Wednesday morning. The accused has been arrested.

Lalita, 42, who worked as a housemaid in Rani Garden area lived with her husband Rajesh and 15 year-old daughter in Multani Mohalla. Her husband is a carpenter, and allegedly has some psychiatric problems. She had an affair with Rakesh, 42.

At around 10 pm, Lalita was on her way to work when Rakesh, a street vendor, stopped her near Yamuna Pushta area and confronted her. In the confrontation, Rakesh took out a pair of scissors and stabbed her multiple times.

“She was stabbed at least six times on her back and chest. The incident took place near a marker area, and people immediately rushed to her aid and also caught the accused. We reached the spot and shifted the woman to the nearest hospital,” said a senior police officer.

Lalita and Rakesh who live in the same locality were in an extramarital relationship for the last 11 years. According to sources, Rakesh, who is unmarried, had been asking her to divorce her husband and marry him.

“What we know so far is that the accused was in a relationship with Lalita. They had been seeing each other for quite some time but recently their relationship soured and Lalita stopped meeting him. Furthermore, the accused has also claimed that she was demanding money from him,” said a police officer.

Couple of days before her death, Lalita had complained against Rakesh to the police at Geeta Colony police station as he had threatened her by entering at her house and police had questioned him about it. Sources said this could also be a reason which spurred the man to kill her.

Police have sent the body for postmortem and a case of murder has been registered in the Gandhi Nagar police station. Further investigation is underway.
