Reports of a new CCTV footage with much clearer view of the suspect in the Chennai techie murder case has seemingly taken police closer to the suspect who is still at large.

“We have gathered a fresh CCTV footage that gives a clearer view of the suspect,” Chennai’s Assistant Police Commissioner KPS Devaraj, who is leading a 25-member investigation team to crack the case, said.

The new footage shows the suspect watching Swathi from a tea shop as she walks towards the station with her father.

Criticising laxities of the police team probing Swathi’s murder, the Madras High Court asked the Centre and the state governments to file a report on why a law should not be passed to ensure the safety of the public.

A bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan passed an order to that effect after taking suo motu cognizance of the murder case, based on a letter to Justice Kaul by Justice N Kirubakaran.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday reviewed the law and order situation at a high-level meeting held in the Secretariat. Home secretary Apurva Varma and DGP Ashok Kumar were among the officials present at the meeting.

‘We have faith in police probe’

A day after the probe into the murder of a 24 year-old IT professional was transferred to the city police, the family on Tuesday expressed confidence that the culprit will be brought to justice soon, PTI reports. “We have much confidence in Chennai Police. I think they will find the culprit and produce him before a court of law,” father of the victim Swathi, Santhanagopalakrishnan, said. He rued that his daughter’s body remained at the Nungambakkam station, where she was found murdered with cut injuries on Friday last, for two and a half hours and “passengers remained mute witnesses.”
