CID hands over Ganapathi case to Madikeri cops

Last Updated 23 July 2016, 19:56 IST

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was probing DySP M K Ganapathi’s suicide case, has handed over the probe to Madikeri police on July 20 due to technical reasons.

“The CID is no more probing the case due to technical reasons. The court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) in Madikeri ordered the filing of an abetment of suicide case under IPC section 306 against former minister K J George and two senior IPS officers A M Prasad and Pronab Mohanty based on harassment charges levelled against them by M K Ganapathi. According to norms, the JMFC’s powers are limited to the local station house officer (SHO). The JMFC can’t direct the CID to investigate the case. Hence, the CID handed over the case to the local police in Madikeri,” a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.
However, Ganapathi’s wife Pavana can move the High Court seeking either a CID or CBI probe. The High Court will decide which agency will probe the case. Pavana has planned to move the HC seeking a CBI probe into the case, he said.

Ganapathi was found hanging in a room in a private lodge Madikeri on July 7 hours after he gave an interview to a local television channel holding George, Prasad and Mohanty responsible if “anything happened to him”.
