Four city-based baking enthusiasts made a first-of-its kind attempt in the world on Sunday. They made the largest dirt cake weighing about 1,078 kg and earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Danish Ali, Archana Diwan, Nidhi Bagri and Poonam Ankur Shrishrimal, who are passionate about baking, attempted a rare feat by making a cake without egg and gelatin. The team, under the banner ‘Bangalore Baking Buddies’, started making the sweet dessert at 9 pm on July 30 and completed the task at 8.15 am on July 31.

Guinness adjudicator Rishi Nath was present to witness the occasion and to weigh the cake, followed by which, the team was given the Guinness certificate. Nearly 220 kg of cream cheese, 550 gram of crushed sandwich cookies, 190 litres of milk, 40 kg of custard powder, 60 kg butter, 190 litres of whipping cream, 65 kg of sugar, 40 kg of candy garnishes and decorations were used to make the cake.

The cake was distributed at the end of the day to more than 400 people who had gathered at the venue, thus adhering to one of the rules laid down for the world records.

The team was earlier a part of group of seven participants which made an entry into the Limca Book of Records in December 2014 for making India’s largest caricature cake — a Santa on one leg. The cake stood 6.1 feet tall and weighed 302 kilograms.

“The love for baking is an added advantage for all four of us and it made our work smooth. We had decided to attempt another feat soon after entering the Limca records. We are delighted to have made it to the Guinness records,” said Poonam  Shrishrimal, a glass designer by profession. The team said they will be distributing cake to non-governmental organisations and government schools on Monday.
