The most deserving victory for Jimmy

Last Updated 01 August 2016, 19:35 IST

What a triumph for Jimmy Walker and what a wonderful guy he is. I am so happy for Jimmy, because after all those wins, I think five of them on PGA, he had it in him for a Major and how he won it!

Golf can be a funny game. Jimmy was having a great 2014, when he was in top-10 in three of the four Majors and in 2015 he did not come anywhere close. This year he missed the cut at the US Open and the Open at Troon and now comes a win. It was indeed the most deserving victory.

I was also told that 2016 was unique in that all four Majors winners – Danny Willett (Masters), Dustin Johnson (US Open), Henrik Stenson (The Open) and now Jimmy (PGA) – are all first-time winners. I believe it is the first time this has happened since 2011. So, we have a brand new set of Major stars. That sure augurs well for our sport.

Jimmy’s bogey free final day – well actually final round, because he played 36 holes on Sunday, was fantastic. Fatigue, tension and all that goes with it were handled superbly. He closed at 14-under and World No 1 Jason Day, came within a whisker of defending his title. He had a great eagle on the closing eagle, but fell short by one.

For Jimmy it was a great week as he opened with a five-under 65 to lead the tournament and followed it with a 66 to hold the halfway lead on nine under with American Robert Streb. He did not get to play on Saturday. At the end of third round, he led Day by one and that’s how the final score stayed as both carded 67 each.
