A painting exhibition ‘Homage to the Rainforest’ is being held in the city to portray the beauty of rainforests in Sri Lanka and across the globe.

The exhibition also aims to create awareness on various endangered species.

Created by artist and conservationist Senaka Senanayake, the focus of the paintings is the endangered rainforest, the plants, animals, birds and insects living in rainforests such as elephants, butterflies, hummingbirds, among others.

“In 2005, I visited the rainforests of Sri Lanka and later the rainforests of Malaysia. I was taken aback by the beauty of forests. At the same time, the extinction of species due to rampant development saddened me. Painting elements such as insects, forests among others in their true beauty was a conscious decision. The present series is a continuation to the efforts that began a decade ago,” said Senanayake.

Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Senanayake gave his first solo painting exhibition at the age of 10. He exhibited across continents before graduating from Yale University in Art and Architecture in 1972. His dream is to visit the rainforests of South America now.

“I started creating paintings for ‘Homage to the Rainforest’ collection from 2014. This is the first time I am showcasing my paintings in Bengaluru and the response has been good so far. The objective of my show is to enable citizens to view the pristine glory of a dying ecosystem and help in its preservation. Especially, the youngsters need to know what is happening to the rich and valuable rainforests across the world,” remarked Senanayake.

The exhibition being held at Gallery Sumukha, KSRTC Colony, Wilson Garden, will go on till August 27 and is free to the public. The timings are from 10:30 am to 6 pm and the show will be closed on Sundays.
