Drunk couple held for manhandling cops

A 26-year-old woman and her husband manhandled two policemen on Cubbon Road in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the police, Jiaxi Yu of China and her husband Prashanth Hiremath, 28, from Bengaluru were arrested by the Commercial Street police. Jiaxi is a teacher in China while Prashanth works as a software engineer in a private company. Around 12.15 am, Prashanth, was riding the bike with Jiaxi as pillion. Both of them were in an inebriated state and Prashanth lost control over his bike and fell down, said the police.

Meanwhile, Fayaz, head constable at Devarjeevanahallii police station and Lingaraju, a police constable attached to Seshadripuram police station, who were deployed for duty near Manekshaw Parade grounds as part of Independence Day preparations, noticed the couple.

They ran towards them to help them, but Jiaxi, who assumed that they had come to create trouble, abused and slapped the constables. Prashanth also joined his wife and manhandled the constables, added the police.

The other policemen who were on duty, noticed the couple creating a ruckus and alerted the control room, who informed the Commercial Street police station.
As there were no woman police officer at the spot, Gangammanagudi police station inspector Mary Shailaja was informed. She went to the spot with two women constables and took the woman and Prashanth to the police station.

The couple were drunk and were arrested based on a complaint filed by the police constables who were manhandled. The woman has a valid passport and visa and had come to the city around four months ago. Prashanth and Jiaxi live in HSR Layout, said the police.
