The state government on Tuesday ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into the murder of multimillionaire businessman, Bhaskar Shetty of Udupi.

“There was a lot of confusion among local residents about the ongoing investigation. The local police have been fair in their investigation, but the public perception was different. The government seriously considered the public perception and wanted to ensure transparency in the investigation. Hence, the CID probe was ordered,” DG&IGP Om Prakash told Deccan Herald.

Senior officers had detailed discussion with IGP (Western Range) Arun Chakravarthy and Udupi Superintendent of Police K T Balakrishna on the ongoing probe. They were informed of the decision for a CID investigation, the state police chief said.

DGP (CID) H C Kishore Chandra said: “We are ready to take up the case. The CID will begin the investigation once the formal communication is received on Wednesday.”

Shetty, who went missing on July 28, was found dead near a temple in Nandalike, Karkala in Udupi district, on August 6. Shetty’s mother lodged a complaint with the police on July 30. She had suspected the involvement of Shetty’s wife Rajeshwari and son Navneet. Later, Navneet confessed to having murdered his father on July 28. He had stated that his mother and the temple priest Niranjan Bhat were part of the conspiracy.
