The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has sought steps by the government to ensure that children below the age of 18 do not participate in the ‘Dahi Handi’ or ‘Mosarina Gadige’ (breaking of the pot filled with curd) event.

As part of the Krishna Janmashtami celebrations, a human pyramid is formed to break a pot hung at a height. The commission is of the opinion that as children are at risk of injury or fall during the event, they must be stopped from taking part.

Citing a 2014 Supreme Court order, the commission has said that those aged below 18 are not allowed to take part in any religious activities or any adventure acts in the name of sports.

Kripa Amar Alva, chairperson, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has, in a note, said, “The government must ensure that children do not take part in these activities. These put children at risk of both physical and psychological injuries.”
