Meghshala, a non-profit organisation that works towards providing tech learning aids to government schools, celebrated Teachers’ Day on Sunday morning.

About 100 government school teachers from across the state had gathered for the event at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan auditorium.

Chief guest Gururaj Karajagi, chairman and managing director of Academy of Creative Teaching, spoke of the importance of teaching with a human touch.

Reminiscing about how his teacher would transport the class to another world when he taught poetry, he said, “If you reach the intellect — and I don’t deny the importance of that — what you teach goes to the short-term memory and is generally forgotten soon after the exam. If you reach the heart, it goes straight to the long-term memory and your students will carry it with them throughout their lives.”

Jyoti Thyagarajan, the brain behind Meghshala, recounted how she met her fellow founder trustee Sridhar Ranganathan two-and-a-half years ago. “We met at a conference at lunch and realised we had the same dream — to bring good, basic school education to every child in India. I had the teaching experience, and he the technology,” she said.

Coupled with the teachers, essential to the equation, it could bring about change, she added. “We put a person in every computer,” she elaborated. Ramya, a teacher at Bellandur Colony Government School and the first to use the Meghshala kit (tab and projector) and app last June, said the learning aids have led to a rise in enthusiasm levels and a dip in absenteeism in her class.

“I took a few days off soon after the first Meghshala class,” she said. “When I came back, my students asked me for the first time, ‘Why didn’t you come to school these few days?’”

Mukund T, scientist and researcher at National Centre for Biological Sciences, who shared the dais with the chief guest, said the NGO was enabling teachers during a global education crisis.
