Three militants and a policeman were killed while three were injured in a day-long encounter in the border district of Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.
Reports said while one group of militants holed up in a private building near the Army’s 93 Brigade headquarters at Allah Pir area in Poonch engaged the security forces, another encounter was going on in a nearby under-construction building.
In the initial assault, one policeman died and two persons were injured, police said, adding, the deceased was identified as R Kumar.
One of the injured was identified as sub inspector Manzoor Hussain and a civilian Tariq.
A police officer said there was a hostage-like situation in the private building as militants were holding Haji Nazir Mir and his wife Mumtaz Mir, members of a well-known political family in the border district.
Mir is a cousin of Congress MLC Jahangir Hussain, who is deputy chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council.
However, the aged husband-wife duo, who had locked themselves inside a room in the building, were rescued unhurt after the encounter ended around 7 pm, he said.
“Both the encounters ended in the evening around 7 pm with the killing of the three holed-up militants,” the official added.
Reports said searches were on at the encounter sites to rule out the possibility of any more militants still hiding.
