Inspired by road trips

Pan-Indian delights
Last Updated 07 October 2016, 18:37 IST

With a new restaurant being opened every second day, Indiranagar is fast becoming another eat street of Bengaluru. And nothing can be better than this for all the foodies residing here. Among these countless restaurants is a new player — ‘The Bangalore Pantry’ — which is located on 100 Feet Road.

You will be welcomed with bright yellow festive lights as you climb up the stairs to reach the place. The décor is creatively designed keeping in mind a minimalistic retro look, and if you look around, you can spot an old radio, classic style glass container and a few photographs hanging on the wall which gives a nostalgic vibe. The menu is the result of the road trips that the owners Anirban Dutta and Roshu have taken over the years across India and abroad. Keeping the different cuisines of India in mind, the couple has curated a pan-Indian menu where one can find dishes from West Bengal, Goa, Pune, Karnataka and Kerala to name a few.

The idea is to serve food (snacks or mains) all day. For starters, treat your taste buds with a ‘khara bun congress’ (spicy bun stuffed with peanuts), ‘bhejitabil chop’ (the typical Bengali beetroot cutlet) or a plate of ‘cheese bread roll’ and ‘fire toast’ (grilled ciabatta with chilly, garlic and cheese). The ‘khara bun congress’ is  the highlight as it is a popular snack item but only a handful of people know about it. So is the cutlet which had a local ‘Kolkata street food’ flavour. The ‘bread roll’ however was a little soggy and can be little more crispier and cheesy to live up to its name.

As you relish the starters, ask for a cold coffee or a masala cola. The balanced taste goes well with the food and is a great choice for the hot weather. Each dish in the main course looks contemporary yet has a local taste.

The menu has ample options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Try the ‘achaari aloo’ with whole wheat ‘parathas’ and you will probably have a new found  love for vegetarian food. One can also ask for a plate of ‘Nizami chicken korma’ with either rice or toast. The spice content is just right and the quantity can be quite filling. As no meal is ever complete without dessert, leaving a little space for it is a clever idea. You wouldn’t want to miss either the ‘caramel custard’ or the traditional ‘Bowring kulfi’ with an innovative twist of ‘salted caramel and praline’.

‘The Bangalore Pantry’ is located at 298/299, upper ground floor, 100 Feet Road, Indiranagar. For details, call 45128596.
