The wife of a Pro-Kabaddi League player hanged herself here on Monday, charging her husband and in-laws with torture for dowry.

Besides writing a suicide note, Lalita (27) has recorded two hour-long audio statements, indicting Bengaluru Bulls player Rohit Chillar and his parents for her death. Married just seven months ago, she was training to be a teacher.Chillar, who joined the Indian Navy under the sports quota in 2009, was on the Indian kabaddi team that won a gold at the South Asian Games earlier this year.

“In her suicide note, Lalita also hints at Rohit having an extramarital affair,” a senior police officer said. Police have registered a dowry death case against Chillar and his parents. When investigators went to the Chillars’ home in Nizampur, a village on the outskirts of Delhi, they found it locked.

Rohit Chillar was in Ahmedabad, providing commentary for Kabaddi World Cup matches. “His parents are absconding and we are conducting raids to arrest them,” a policeman said.
Lalita’s parents alleged Chillar and his family had always been greedy for dowry.

“On September 24, when she couldn’t take their torture any longer, she came away. She hanged herself from a ceiling fan when we had gone out yesterday (Monday). I saw her body at 7 pm,” said Karan Singh, Lalita’s father.

Chillar met Lalita through common friends four years ago.  Following a three-year courtship, Lalita and Chillar were married in March, with their parents approving of the match. This was Lalita’s second marriage. Her first had ended in divorce by mutual consent in 2012. “We fulfilled all the dowry expectations of Rohit’s parents,” said Karan Singh.

Within months of the wedding, problems emerged between Lalita and her in-laws. After three days of alleged torture, Lalita told her husband’s family she wanted to return to her parents. “They just dropped her off at the bus stand. She had to travel on her own,” a relative said. Police are waiting for Chillar to join the probe.
