Locals alleged that the girl and woman were gang raped and then murdered. They put the blame on the security personnel, whose camps are located in the area.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who ordered the probe, said initial findings indicated that the woman and girl were drowned in a rivulet. “But, we have ordered the judicial probe to rule out other circumstances of death. Probe will be conducted by a retired judge of the state High Court,” he said.
Normal life was paralysed across the Valley in view of a separatist sponsored strike. Undeclared curfew was imposed in Shopian and Pulwama. Over 30 persons were injured in clashes between the police and protesters.
