'Take steps to contain contagious diseases'

Speaking at the review meeting of district surveillance programmes in DC office on Monday, he said during summer, there is all possibility of recurrence of Malaria, gastroenteric and flu among other diseases.

DHO Dr Shivaram Nayak said that is essential to see that the water source is protected from contamination. District Surveillance Officer Dr M K Sathish said 8 cases of cholera were reported in Madikeri district hospital and 133 cases in Somwarpet government hospital, between January and December 2009.

As many as 38 persons have been treated for typhoid in Somwarpet Health Centre, 20 in Virajpet Health Centre, 20 in Kushalnagar Primary Health Centre. Similarly, in 2009, 28 persons were treated for measles in Somwarpet Government Hospital. 202 persons were treated for diarrhoea at Somwarpet Government Hospital and 54 persons in Kushalnagar primary health centre.

In Madikeri hospital, 639 persons were treated for dog bite, 616 persons in Virajpet taluk hospital and 665 persons in Kushalnagar primary health centres. For snake bite, about 39 persons were treated in Madikeri, 25 in Somwarpet and Virajpet taluk hospital and 25 in Kushalnagar primary health centre. No death has been reported due to contagious diseases during 2009.
