Kushalnagar APMC: 33 in fray for 12 directors' posts

Remaining three posts to be nominated; election to be held on January 12

The election to the posts of 12 directors of agriculture produce marketing committee (APMC), Kushalnagar, in Somwarpet taluk has, in all, 33 candidates in the fray.

The election is scheduled to be held on January 12.

Major political parties – Congress, BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) – are playing all the cards to ensure victory of their party-supported nominees in the fray, as holding the reins of APMC has assumed great significance. The committee generates revenue through various cess, apart from getting regular funds from the government. It is vested with power to develop market yards, rural markets, laying roads for farm lands, besides other amenities in the markets.

Of the total directorial posts that will be contested for, 11 will be elected from the farming sector and one from the trader community. The remaining three posts will be filled by nomination.

The Kushalnagar APMC, established in the year 1978, has remained a main market, with Somwarpet market being the sub-market. G P Shanthaveerappa, who was a nominated director, was the maiden president, followed by Baggana Ponnappa, C P Gopal, G N Ramappa (acting), N C Appaswamy, B M Lava, S P Ponnappa, B B Kalaiah (acting), P K Sheshappa, M B Jayanth and B B Satish.

As the general elections is over a year ago, the prominent political parties have taken the coming elections as a prestige issue to assess their strength in the hustings.
