The city municipal council on Tuesday unanimously resolved to withdraw water supply management from the  Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) in Hassan.

Congress councillor Yashwant, who raised the issue in the meeting, said that the water board had failed in addressing the drinking water supply problems in the city.

“It already owes Rs 17 lakh to the municipality and hence it is better not to entrust
the board with the responsibility of supplying water to the city.

Another member Suresh Kumar supported Yashwant and suggested that the municipality withdraw the Rs 82-lakh tender awarded to the water supply board and Nirmiti Kendra. He said that the municipality itself should take over the responsibility of water supply.

CMC president Anil Kumar said the management of water supply to the city was handed over to the board after seeking permission of members and that there was no mismanagement.

He said as per procedure, permission would be taken from all members and a letter would be sent to deputy commissioner.

However, it was decided that the municipality should divest the water supply board of the responsibility.

Yashwant said a vigilance committee should be constituted comprising 11 members of Congress, BJP and JD(S). He said that no such committee had been constituted by the local body till now. This panel should ensure transparent administration and see to it that taxpayers’ money is not wasted. Municipal president Anil Kumar welcomed the suggestion.
The meeting discussed sinking of borewells in 35 wards of the city.

A few councillors complained that the officials did not provide adequate information to the queries submitted under the Right to Information Act. It was pointed out that officials, who failed to provide information, were fined Rs 30,000.

Anil Kumar informed that the CMC would provide Rs 3,500 as funeral expenses in case of the death of a BPL card holder.
