The JMFC court, Tumakuru, has remanded Umesh, the assistant sub-inspector who raped a mentally challenged woman and driver of the vehicle in which the crime was committed, into judicial custody till January 30.

SP Isha Pant said Umesh had called a quarry owner on his phone and asked the latter to send his sports utility vehicle (Bolero jeep) to a place on the outskirts of Tumakuru on Saturday night. Eshwar drove the vehicle to the spot and Umesh raped the woman in the same vehicle. “Since Eshwar was an accomplice in the crime, he too was arrested on Sunday,” the SP said.

Meanwhile, V S Ugrappa, the chairman of Committee on Prevention of Atrocities against Women and Children, met the victim and her family members on Monday. He said that it was a case of protector turning predator and the civic society condemns the heinous crime.

Later in Bengaluru, Ugrappa sought a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the victim. He said the poor conviction rate of rape accused has resulted in increase in crimes against women.

Chairperson of Karnataka State Women’s Commission, Nagalakshmi Bai, also met the victim on Monday evening.
