JK govt to set up 56 micro-hydel projects, 3000 biogas plants

"The state government will set up 56 micro-hydel power projects upto 2 micro watt station capacity and 3,000 bio-gas plants, besides 191 solar power plants to promote use of alternative source of energy in the state," Minister for Science and Technology Aga Syed Rouhullah informed the state Assembly today.

A proposal for installation of these hydel projects was sent to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, and sanction has been granted.
Similarly, proposal for installation of 3,000 biogas plants for the year 2010-11 was also sent to the Centre which had agreed to provide financial assistance for the same.

The Centre has also sanctioned setting up of 191 solar power plants, 69 for health institutions and 121 for community information centres in the state, he said.
Science and Technology Department through Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency and Integrated Rural Energy Programme is implementing various schemes to promote the use of alternative source of energy in the state, he said.

These schemes include solar home lighting systems in remote villages, solar lanterns, solar power plants, wind energy, solar street lights, solar wind hybrid systems, solar water heater heating systems, smokeless chullas, upgradation of water mills and micro hydel projects.
