The Belur bandh called by various organisations protesting release of water from Yagachi reservoir to Hassan, was total and peaceful in the temple town on Tuesday.

Shops and commercial establishments remained closed for the day while movie halls had suspended the shows.

Buses did not ply. Banks, schools and colleges did not function. The protesters who took out a march from Channakeshava temple, raised slogans against the elected representatives for causing injustice to the people of Belur. The bandh call was given after former prime minister Deve Gowda directed release of water from Yagachi dam to Hassan city.

According to sources, Gowda visited the dam on Saturday and asked the engineers to release 20 cusecs of water for 10 days to Hassan to meet drinking water needs.

MLA Rudresh Gowda, attempted to pacify protesters saying that he would speak to the officials concerned. However, his request went unheeded. Later, he visited the dam and instructed the engineers to stop release of water.

Members of BJP also staged a separate protest in this connection. They took out a protest march in the town and raised slogans against Deve Gowda.
