Curfew was imposed in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur-Kheri town after communal violence broke out late on Thursday night, following an objectionable video that was circulated on social networking sites.

According to the police  on Friday, six people have been arrested in connection with the violence, which left several injured. Tension sparked off after two youths of the town reportedly made a video containing objectionable comments on gods and goddesses of a particular religion and posted it on social media.

Angry members of the community indulged in stone-pelting and also damaged shops. Two youths sustained bullet injuries and were admitted to hospital. “We will impose the National Security Act on them (the arrested),” said a senior police official.

Security personnel have been deployed in strength in the town and senior officials have been camping there to monitor the situation, which was stated to be tense, but under control.
