Last Updated 24 March 2010, 17:03 IST

Speaking after inaugurating the district-level ‘World Tuberculosis Day’ programme organised by Zilla Panchayat in association with District Health and Family Welfare Department, College of Education, Ambagilu and Taluk Tuberculosis Unit here on Wednesday, he said that as many as 100 Tuberculosis cases have been registered every month in the district.

Ignorance concerning the infection and lack of knowledge on spreading of the disease has increased the number of cases. Immediate measures should be taken to create awareness, especially in the rural areas, he added.  Speaking on the occasion, DHO Dr Ramachandra Bairy said that TB is a communicable influenza. Any normal individual gets infected through the person carrying the virus. It is disastrous if it remains unchecked. Addiction to smoking and alcohol may open up doors to Tuberculosis. Nearly 75 per cent of the AIDS infections carry Tuberculosis virus along with them, he added.

District Hospital Surgeon Dr Dayanand Kamath, District Information Officer Junjanna and others were present.
