Railway police have arrested two inter-state thieves suspected to be involved in the illegal transportation of silver ornaments and recovered valuables worth Rs 14 lakh.

The suspects, P Sathish (37) and M Suresh (33), are residents of Chennai. The police had constituted special teams as the number of cases of illegal transportation of stolen goods via trains had gone up. “Two men got down from the double decker express train from Chennai at Cantonment railway station on Tuesday around 1.15 pm.

They were carrying trolley bags. From their appearance, they were looking like labourers. Our men grew suspicious and checked their bags. There were 31 kg silver ornaments inside their bags,” Anoop A Shetty, SP (Railways) said. The duo could not give satisfactory replies regarding the source of the ornaments and the purpose of transporting them. “They claimed that they collected the ornaments at a factory on the outskirts of Chennai. The police contacted the factory management, but the factory authorities clarified that the duo were not their employees. We are still interrogating the suspects to ascertain the source of ornaments,” he said. The police suspected that the duo may have stolen the ornaments from a jewellery showroom or attempted to transport them to the city as part of a hawala racket.
