The construction work of classrooms at Government First Grade Degree College has been stalled midway through putting the students to grave hardships.

The college, which offers UG courses in all three streams - Arts,Commerce and Science, has a student strength of 1,212 students, including 808 girls. Only 14 classrooms are available for three courses.

The college management has no options but to hold classes in four shifts. The government had sanctioned additional eight classrooms to the college. If the construction work was completed on time, we would have conducted the classes for all three streams in one or two shifts. As per plans, the Land Army should have built three classrooms in old building and five classrooms in new building. The implementing agency is unlikely to complete the works anytime soon. So, the management has no option but to hold classes in multiple shifts for the 2017-18 academic year too, laments Principal Dr T Venkatachelaiah.

The Land Army started construction of three classrooms at old building under SDP project. But the executing agency has stopped works two months back for some reasons. The executing agency not even bothered to remove sheet and wooden planks used for Centring. The newly built rooms leaked when it rained on March 6.

The government has sanctioned a further Rs 1 crore for construction of five new classrooms in new building. The works on five classrooms too have been stalled midway through. The Land Army has already received Rs 90 lakh in two phases but the work is nowhere near completion.

The hapless students are forced to attend classes in shifts and this will continue in next academic year. Also, the delay will only cause damage to the rooms as the afternoon showers have already started, says a staff on the condition of anonymity.
