Elephant tramples student to death

A student was trampled to death and her brother was injured after an elephant attacked them at Tharikatte here on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Saufana (18), a second-year BA student at Cauvery College. Her elder brother Shakeer, a final-year BA student, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gonikoppa.

Saufana and Shakeer were on their way to the college on their two-wheeler around 8.30 am, when a herd of elephants appeared on the road a kilometre away from their house. One of them attacked their vehicle, killing Saufana instantly, while Shakeer managed to escape with injuries. Assistant Conservator of Forests, Sripathi, and RFO Gopal visited the victims’ family and handed over a cheque for Rs 2 lakh.
