Have inclination for study and analysis, media students told

Addressing the inaugural of a seminar on “Career in media” organised by the Department of PG Studies in Mass Communication and Journalism of SDM College in Ujire on Friday, he said that newspapers and television have impact on millions of readers and viewers. Reporters need to be creative writers too.  He also said one should not look at media only from the point of employment, but there is much to do in upholding its dignity.

Earlier, inaugurating the seminar, Udayavani Editor Balakrishna Holla said that if job opportunity in media sector is increasing, so are the challenges and problems.

“A person should be mentally prepared to become a reporter because it brings in a lot of responsibility and pressure,” he said and added that political knowledge, social concern, knowledge of modern and ancient society, advanced technology, translation skills, modern outlook are some of the qualities and skills required to become a reporter. He said there are a lot of requirements in the present-day media industry but there is a lack of capable youngsters suiting the necessities.

Dean of PG Studies Prof J Mahaveer, Mass Communication and Journalism Department Head Prof Bhaskar Hegade and others were present. In the sessions that followed, Mangalore University Mass Communication and Journalism Department Chairman Prof G P Shivaram, Bangalore-based Aim High Consulting CEO N Ravishankar and Deccan Herald Associate Editor K Subrahmanya spoke on academia-industry relations, career opportunities in public relations and print media respectively.
