R K Nagar bypoll: 62 in fray

With the last date for withdrawal of nominations ending on Monday, a total of 62 candidates, including eight women, are in the fray for the R K Nagar bypoll, scheduled for April 12. The election was necessitated due to the demise of sitting member and chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

A source in the Election Commission said 113 candidates had filed their nominations. After scrutiny, the commission rejected 57 applications, and eight candidates withdrew their nominations.

Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa, who floated her own political outfit MGR Amma Deepa Peravai, will also be contesting the bypoll. Some major political outfits, including Vaiko’s MDMK, the G K Vasan-led TMC, VCK, PMK and CPI have decided to stay away from the bypolls. The counting of votes will be held on April 15.
