Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said the government will release the caste census data soon.

The CM, who was here to meet Congress top leadership to appraise about the recent held bypolls results, told reporters that he already held a discussion with Karnataka Backward Class Commission officials and they have agreed to finalise data at the earliest.

The Commission is compiling datas of two districts- Bengaluru Urban and Rural Districts. Once the Commission submits its report, the State Government will make the details to public, he said.

With the assembly polls in early next year, the Chief Minister earlier said his government was contemplating providing reservation commensurate with the population based on outcome of the caste census.

There is a demand to increase the reservation in proportion to the population and he too is keen on this. He said he was awaiting the release of the socio-economic survey report to take a final call.

“Caste census was done in 1931 and reservation was done based on it. Over the years, the population has increased.  With the Congress  government that ordering for  a socio-economic survey to ascertain the impact of reservation benefits and also to know how many are still deprived of it. Once the socio-economic survey report is released, steps would be taken to increase the reservation commensurate with the population,” said Siddaramaiah.
