Travis Head enjoyed his best day in IPL personally with the bat, but had to experience the bitterest defeat of the season by his team Royal Challengers Bangalore here on Sunday.
Head’s IPL’s best of 75 had taken RCB to 158/6 after being inserted by Kolkata Knight Riders but with the visiting openers – Chris Lynn (50 off 22) and Sunil Narine (54 off 17) – plundering 105 runs in the first six overs of the chase, the game was over for all practical purposes. KKR won by six wickets with plenty to spare.

“Results-wise, probably yes,” said Head when asked if this was RCB’s worst season ever. “Disappointing tonight… I thought we put up a good score, about par for that wicket. Obviously their batters came and put some pressure (on us) and took advantage of the first six (overs of Powerplay). Yeah, it’s been disappointing. We never got any momentum throughout the tournament,” he rued.

Despite nothing going in their favour on the field, Head said it’s been an enjoyable experience for the team off the field.

“Nothing has changed off the field this season and since I have been with RCB,” he noted when asked as to what has been the mood in the team. “We’ve kept consistent off the field. It’s been really enjoyable off the field. Everyone has worked really hard. It just hasn’t quite gelled on the field. That happens sometimes in T20 cricket. Sometimes you can’t get that momentum. I can’t fault anyone off the field. Everyone has been fantastic. Again, they’re professional cricketers and professional people as well. Not much has changed off the field. It’s just unfortunate that it hasn’t come together on the field,” he offered.

KKR leg-spinner Piyush Chawla said he had never seen the kind of hitting that Lynn and Narine unleashed on the day.

“Well to be honest, never (seen such hitting). I think the way Lynny and Sunil batted, they took the game away from RCB in the first six overs itself.”
