KMC (Mangaluru) Consultant Rheumatologist Dr Sajjan Shenoy said students should get into medical or any other professional courses only if they have an inclination towards the related fields. If they succumb to parental pressure, they may find it very difficult later, as the fields demand a lot of dedication, he added.

He was speaking at the CET Pre-Counseling Guidance Programme organised by Prajavani and Deccan Herald and sponsored by Presidency University, Bengaluru, as part of the ‘Edu Verse’, ninth edition of CET pre counselling, at Canara College here on Monday.

The programme provided a platform for the students who have just finished second PUC to have a clear vision on various education courses after PUC, a detailed analysis on the branches of medical and engineering studies and also on the CET counseling process. Incidentally, Dr Shenoy had secured first rank in CET (Medical) in 2001.

Dwelling upon various stages of MBBS and MD/MS, Dr  Shenoy said one should not take up the study of medicine only with the intention of getting high remuneration. Professional satisfaction is what actually matters. A combination of memory and intellect is essential in MBBS. One should not back out only because the studies are difficult. One has to accept the challenges in the field, he said.

It is a wrong notion that one has to do postgraduate studies in medicine or else it is a waste. After completing MBBS, one can go back and work in their community, Dr Shenoy said. Sri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (Bantakal, Udupi) Civil Engineering Department Head Prof B Radheshyam said students, after second PUC, may choose courses, such as paramedical, humanities, management, law, allied health sciences, general sciences and law as well, according to their combination.

Speaking on the role of an engineer, he said an engineer is the one who designs and builds things in such a way that they are economical, reliable, repeatable and scalable. Analytical mind, strong problem solving abilities, sound mathematical and scientific foundation and a desire to be a continuous learner are the key requirements for success in engineering, he advised.

On the successful completion of engineering course, there are ample opportunities for the graduates in the field of construction, manufacturing, testing and verification, management, maintenance, service, teaching and research, government service and also entrepreneurship, he added.

There are prospects, such as global mobility, benefit of liberalisation, variety of job and career prospects. At the same time, there are challenges such as large supply of engineers and poor quality control. One cannot predict the change of trend with respect to the popular demand for a particular branch of engineering. Therefore, it is advisable to the students to choose a wider area in Engineering course, Dr Radheshyam said.

Government Pre-university College (Bantwal) Principal Saraswathi B, who has been the Nodal Officer for CET Counseling during the previous year, elaborated upon verification and counseling process and advised students to keep ready the necessary original documents along with multiple photocopies of the documents attested by gazetted officers, well in advance. One should visit the Karnataka Examinations Authority for updates such, as seat matrix, allocation etc, she said. Brief question answer sessions were held after each session wherein students and their parents cleared their doubts.

Prajavani Mangaluru Bureau Chief Balakrishna Puttige, Prajavani - Deccan Herald Mangaluru Circulation Division Manager Prakash Nayak and  Presidency University (Bengaluru) Director (Admissions and Marketing) Arun Kumar H N were present.
