Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav on Friday traded barbs in the state assembly over law and order situation in the state.
Akhilesh, while making a speech in the legislative council, said that the crime graph had shot up in the state during the BJP rule and the chief minister had failed to rein in the criminals.
''The law and order situation has turned for the worse in the past two months,'' Akhilesh said as he accused the state government of being on a ''witch hunt''. The former chief minister also criticised the government for setting up 'anti-Romeo Squad'.
Adityanath, whose two-month stint came in for sharp criticism for his alleged failure on the law and order front, said in the vidhan sabha that his government was committed to establish the rule of law in the state.
''There is no place for criminals in the state...we will not spare those, who provide shelter to the criminals,'' he said while making a reply on the motion of thanks on the governor's address to the joint session of the house.
The chief minister slammed the behaviour of the opposition in the assembly during governor's address and said that it had lowered the dignity of the house.
''Some members whistled in the house during the address....we know well who whistle.....there are traffic cops, who whistle...for the the others there is anti-romeo squad,'' he remarked.
