The meaning of being truly educated

Last Updated 23 May 2017, 06:27 IST

Education is the noblest achievement of human endeavour. It is a process that cultures the wellbeing of a person. It is the development of sensibilities and refinement of the assets. Indeed the culmination of acumen, aesthetics and academics has to be blended in order to be 'educated'.

But, we tend to consider education as a goal of procuring mere academic qualification. Such a pursuit is treasured to be a milestone in securing a profession, progression and propagation of status. Scholastic aptitudes are often viewed as kaleidoscopes as they seem to show the design of the future. One should not underplay the refinement of other facets. This is similar to the extension of a periphery while the core is neglected. It is vital to note that mere academic progress seldom builds human master pieces.

Education should aim at dual factors. Firstly, the realisation of potentialities. Secondly, the refinements of inner virtues. Realisation of potentialities/skills should be the goal of education. Then fulfilment of 'self' attains itself. This will lead to the quest for perfection. There will be no scope for discontentment.

An individual is cultured. The society reaps benefit. There is justification of Swami Vivekananda's words, "Education is the manifestation of the best." A profession gets its dignity and thus dignity of labour prevails as a zealous professional is at it. Each job has a glory of its own. In the West, education is not the fulfilment of ego. Education should be therefore pursued in a broader vista. There should be no room for ego and prejudice while one opts for a particular stream of education.

The second objective of education is the refinement of virtues. A pedantic is not a sign of being fully evolved. Social skills and aesthetic aptitudes can truly transform an individual. He/she will be able to appreciate the canvas of life's joys. Optimism, charity and selflessness have to be nourished in adequate proportion to make life worthy.

A host of educated minds can elevate the world. Let not one factor become the 'blinkers' for the regeneration of other. The aims of education are lofty and noble.
