The University of Mysore (UoM) Academic Council on Wednesday approved renewing affiliation to 170 first grade colleges for the academic year 2017-18, and recommended temporary affiliation for nine colleges.

The council meeting chaired by UoM in-charge Vice-Chancellor Dayananda Mane approved affiliation at a meeting held at the Crawford Hall. The affiliation is based on the report submitted by the College Development Council (CDC) after visiting the colleges which had applied for renewal of the affiliation. Of the 170 colleges, nine have permanent affiliation status. In addition, the council also approved continuation for post graduate courses in 97 colleges.

Members of CDC Aisha M Sheriff, who is also Dean, Faculty of Commerce, and Ningamma C Betsur, Dean, Department of Education, complained that the deans and head of the departments are being neglected in the process of reviewing the facilities in the colleges. “The authorities do not inform them during visits to colleges and many a times they are avoided. Hundreds of colleges are offering commerce courses and the institutions have not taken expertise of the teaching faculty into consideration,” Sheriff said.

However, the VC said that these are the lapses of the CDC and it should not be repeated.
The council members agreed to send a proposal to the state government to consider and make amendments to the criterion of educational qualifications so that only those who have passed MA in Public Administration will be eligible to teach UG and PG Public Administration. Similarly, the members also suggested to remove the guest faculty who possess only a post graduation degree and are thus ineligible. The members suggested that fresh interviews must be conducted to appoint faculty members.

Review panel to visit UoM

University Review Commission will visit the UoM to analyse and review the functioning on May 26 and 27. Dayananda Mane said that the team, headed by former vice chancellor of Bangalore University, N R Shetty, will visit the varsity for two days and interact with the teaching faculty members, students and other staff members.

“The team comprising, V B Coutinho, former director of Directorate of Legal Education, Bar Council of India and A M Pathan, former vice chancellor of Central University, Kalaburagi among others will review the facilities and functioning of the varsity. Lingaraj Gandhi, Director for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Board (PMEB), will assist the team members,” he said.

The council members suggested that the varsity authorities take measures to improve the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in the years to come.

A member said that a majority of the private institutions have facilitated smart classrooms for every department and the varsity too should convert classrooms into smart classrooms.

As per a survey conducted by the NIRF, a part of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, UoM has secured the 36th rank in the universities category among 774 universities in India and is also ranked 57th in the overall category among 3,300 institutions in the country. The council agreed to give an incentive of Rs 50,000 for PMEB team for their effort in achieving the ranking.

VC to meet Governor

The VC said that he would meet Governor Vajubhai Vala and submit a report in connection with the appointment of the VC on June 2 at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru.
