In an attempt to increase green cover through seed ball culture for sustainable forest growth, city-based Clean Mysuru Foundation, has been working towards promoting cleanliness by preventing environmental degradation through task oriented activities.

The foundation has planned ‘Green Chamundi Abhiyana’ at Sri Shivananada Ashram at the footsteps of Chamundi Hill on May 28 to initiate its efforts for a green canopy here.

In its pursuit towards a greener environment, the foundation has planned to create a green canopy in and around Chamundi Hill for a period of five years.

Under this initiative, medicinal plants, shrubs, fruit-bearing and environmentally sustainable seed varieties will be planted though seed ball culturing. As part of the Green Chamundi Abhiyana, a volunteering approach for seed ball culture has been formulated.

“With the support and association of several organisations, we can increase the momentum, awareness and fight against global, local climate change due to bad practices. With this green initiative, bird population would be increased to create a natural green canopy. The uniqueness of the Abhiyana is to bring awareness on mixed tree culture and use of urban compost in seed ball culture,” Clean Mysuru Foundation secretary S Madhukesh said.

Seed ball culture is an innovative method and is adopted by many communities to create sustainable forest. Clean Mysuru Foundation hopes that the method will promote home composting and also enable more green environs in the days to come.

The foundation is adopting the method for seed ball culture by utilising red soil, cow dung and urban compost mixture produced by Mysuru City Corporation by using home-generated wet waste. The foundation has procured seeds from Karnataka Forest Department, Seed Division at Nagavala, and has also purchased medicinal variety seeds for seed ball culture programme.

“It is an interesting fact to note that a natural way of growing trees using seed ball culture along with plantation would be able to enhance forest cover in future. Clean Mysuru Foundation would like participation of citizens and organisations for creating a green canopy in all open places to attract birds and animals for sustainable forest growth,” Madhukesh said.

Organisations and institutions such as Infosys, Aruna Green Ventures Greenaria, H V Rajeev Sneha Balaga, Namma Mysuru Foundation, Akhanda Bharata Seva Sene and others have extended their support for the Abhiyana.
