Students from engineering colleges affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) protested outside the VTU regional office in Nagarbhavi on Wednesday, raising concerns about several issues in the university.

“Last week, we got a circular saying that the examination fee has been increased to nearly Rs 1,300 from around Rs 500. How can rural and poor students afford such exorbitant fees?” one student asked.

The protest was organised by the state unit of ABVP. The students said the university was trying to recover the money it lost to I-T raids by charging high fees.

The university is delaying the announcement of regular examinations and revaluation, putting students in a fix, they said. “The exams for the 8th semester have been scheduled for June 6 but we don’t know the results of revaluation of the previous semester. Now, we don’t know if we need to give a re-exam for those subjects and this will be the last chance to clear them,” a student in a city college said. University authorities are asking them to pay for both revaluation and re-examination, assuring them that if they pass in the revaluation, the re-exam fee will be refunded.

The VTU VC met the students and told them that a syndicate meeting would be called and a decision on these issues will be taken within two days.
