Sultry in North, monsoon inch closer to Odisha, Bihar

Sultry conditions prevailed in northern states even as pre-monsoon showers lashed parts of Odisha and Bihar today.

Residents of the national capital reeled under hot and humid conditions with the maximum temperature hovering around 42 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.6 degrees Celsius.

The MeT office has predicted a thunderstorm in some areas tomorrow.

Rain lashed parts of Punjab and Haryana, bringing the mercury level down at most of the places in the two states.

Chandigarh and surrounding areas witnessed light showers.

Ambala in Haryana registered a maximum temperature of 36.7 degrees Celsius, while Karnal recorded a high of 39.2 degrees Celsius. Hisar, however, had a hot day at 42 degrees Celsius.

Ludhiana in Punjab recorded a high of 37.5 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar and Patiala registered a maximum of 39.3 degrees Celsius and 39.6 degrees Celsius respectively.

Light to moderate rain was recorded at some places in Jaipur, Bharatpur and Bikaner divisions of Rajasthan. Dry weather conditions prevailed in the rest of the state.

Churu sizzled under a blazing sun at 43.1 degrees Celsius and was hottest place in Rajasthan. Barmer sweltered at 42.8, while Bikaner had a high of 42.5.

Southwest monsoon-induced rains lashed many parts of Odisha even as the heat returned to the western part of the state.

The mercury breached the 40-degree Celsius mark at four places in western Odisha. Angul was the hottest place in the state at 40.7 degrees Celsius. Sambalpur's maximum was 40.4 degrees Celsius, Jharsuguda 40.2 and Balangir 40.

Pre-monsoon showers lashed several parts of Bihar today, offering some much-needed respite from the scorching heat to the residents.

The weatherman said monsoon is expected to hit the Purnea border on June 17 and then proceed to other parts of the state.

Patna gauged 39.8 mm of rainfall and Bhagalpur 21 mm. Gaya was the hottest place in the state at 38.4 degrees Celsius.

The weatherman has predicted heavy rain in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Goa, Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka tomorrow.
Thunderstorm with gusty winds is very likely over Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
