Confusion prevailed over serving alcohol in clubs as some shut their liquor section on Monday due to delay in renewal of licences.
While the Karnataka State Cricket Association Club House has stopped liquor service since Saturday, many others kept the spirits flowing on assurance from excise officials.
“We have already submitted an application with necessary documents seeking renewal of liquor licence. Though Excise officials said there is no problem with renewal, we have not got the permission yet," chairman of the Club House Mallikarjuna Swamy said.
Secretary of Federation of Clubs of Karnataka H S Srikanth said all clubs can operate as long as they meet the Excise department's requirements. “Excise officials have permitted the clubs to serve liquor and assured of renewing the licence at the earliest,” he added.
Asked about the delay, Bengaluru Urban district Deputy Commissioner V Shankar said that 20 clubs in the city were situated within 500 metres from highways. “However, following clarification that clubs can serve liquor, we have started renewing the licence. All clubs will get their licence within two days," he added.
