Shiv Sena and BJP workers raised slogans against each other and clashed on Wednesday at a formal function organised as part of the roll-out of Goods and Service Tax (GST) at the civic body of Mumbai.

The incident took place when Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray and Finance and Planning Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar were present inside the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters in south Mumbai. While BJP gave slogans like “Modi, Modi”, Shiv Sena shouted, “chor hai, chor hai”.

However, Shiv Sena leader Kishori Pednekar said that they reacted when BJP corporators raised slogans against Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray. One of the BJP corporators, Makrand Narvekar, was reportedly manhandled during the incident.

The function was organised to mark the handing over of a cheque of Rs 600 crores to the BMC to compensate the loss that it would suffer after Octroi was withdrawn from 1 July.

Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar and BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta too were present.

More details are awaited.
