'I see myself working constantly'

Last Updated 12 July 2017, 21:37 IST

Singer-songwriter Yash Narvekar first entered a recording studio when he was barely 12 years old. The young artiste always dreamt of making it big in the music industry. The experience at the recording studio further strengthened his determination to become a singer. Over the years, he has worked with several accomplished music directors and carved a niche for himself.

His latest work is the song ‘Mere Dil Mein’ from ‘Half Girlfriend’. It has vocals and lyrics co-written by Yash. He has also debuted as a music composer and co-written and sung the track ‘Teri Yadoon Mein’ from ‘Behen Hogi Teri’. Yash is presently working on the title track for Anil Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor starrer ‘Mubarkan’. In an interview with

Nina C George, Yash talks about his inspiration to become a musician.

What made you choose to work for ‘Half Girlfriend’?

I was preparing for an exam when I got a call from the team of ‘Half Girlfriend’. I have been assisting a few music directors for a while now and being asked to write a song or compose a tune is a routine thing for me. Initially, I was supposed to only write the songs for ‘Half Girlfriend’, but the music director liked my tone when I dubbed for the songs.

I was then asked to write and lend my voice as well.

What do you enjoy more – singing or composing?

I am essentially a singer. But I have always been inclined towards learning all the aspects of music. I have had a chance to work with some of the best musicians in the country and I’ve learnt a great deal in the process.

How would you describe your style?

I would like to think of myself as a versatile musician. I trained in Hindustani classical music when I was 13 years old. I later got interested in rock, metal, funk and eventually, Bollywood music. I don’t want to slot myself in a particular genre. I am open to experimentation.

What fuels your creativity?

A musician’s job is done if the tune or lyrics that they make remain in people’s head. I am always inspired by the various artistes I listen to. And everything around me also triggers my creativity. I could even come up with a tune when I am driving.

How do you keep pace with competition?

There is so much talent in every corner of our country. Every state has its own flavour, style and distinct feel. You need to respect that diversity and work in tune with it.

What’s in the pipeline?

I am presently working on the title track of ‘Mubarakan’. This is a big boost for me after working in ‘Half Girlfriend.’ This makes me feel more confident about my work.

Where do you see yourself a few years from now?

I see myself working constantly to make music that I would really like to see in the market. I have been writing music since I was a child and I am waiting to breathe life into some of the lyrics that I’ve
written.
