Chairman of the Legislative Committee on Women and Child Welfare N A Haris lamented that officials have failed to implement government-sponsored projects in an effective manner.

He addressed officials during a meeting organised at the Zilla Panchayat auditorium here on Wednesday to review the progress of government schemes in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts.

“If the officials face any problem in implementing the schemes, they should bring it to the notice of the committee. Though the government has introduced a variety of programmes for the welfare of women and children, the officials have failed to ensure that these reach the beneficiaries. Due to the lapses of the officials, people are blaming the state government,” he said.

Haris said that the district is lagging behind in identifying malnourished children and providing them with nutritious food. Deputy Director for Women and Child Welfare K Radha, who provided details about the Comprehensive Child Development Programme (CCDP), said that there were 341 malnourished children in the district in 2016 and in 2017 the officials have identified 302 children. “We have improved the health of 39 children,” she said.

Harris directed Deputy Commissioner D Randeep to ensure that no child suffers from health issues due to malnutrition. He sought information about the measures taken to control foeticide. He made enquiries with District Health Officer Dr B Basavaraju about the number of scanning centres operating in the district.

Haris said that foeticide is rampant in the district and directed officials to keep a watch on scanning centres. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vikram Amte said that as many as 68 rape cases have been reported in 2015-16 and three of the accused are absconding. Haris directed police to arrest the accused.

Superintendent of Police Ravi D Chennannanavar said that organised gangs are operating in trafficking of women and children in the district. He promised to curb the menace.
