LS adjourned amid ruckus on farmers' issue

Last Updated 20 July 2017, 19:58 IST
The Lok Sabha was adjourned without transacting any business on Thursday due to noisy protests by the Opposition against the failure of the government to help farmers who are in distress.

The Lok Sabha witnessed an uproar soon after it assembled for the day, with several MPs from parties like the Congress, Trinamool Congress, RJD and the CPM walking into the Well of the House.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced that she had disallowed the notices moved by some Congress MPs for adjournment motions on the plight of the farmers. The Opposition MPs, however, continued to raise slogans from the Well, slamming the BJP-led government for failing to help the farmers.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the Lower House had a discussion on the issue on Wednesday, which had continued late into the night. The Opposition MPs, however, did not relent. The Speaker initially tried to continue with the Question Hour, but she had to adjourn the House till 11.30 am. The ruckus continued even after the Lok Sabha reassembled, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House till noon.
